His brother, Whakaruku Tangira, and a nephew, Tutu (Duncan) Tangira, also served in the Battalion. Duncan was killed the day before Haki.

His son Pipi Te Hei also served in the Battalion (Monty Soutar, Nga Tama Toa - The Price of Citizenship: C Company 28 (Maori) Battalion 1939-1945, David Bateman, Auckland, 2008: 336).
