Excellent photo of 2NZEF soldiers male and female, enjoying a deserved picnic and beer under delightfull NZ like tree shaded surrounds, such a  contrast to desert battlefield conditions..

Capt. Hayward centre left in what clearly is a warm comfortable climate and maybe in the Maadi camp area after the return from Tunisia and cease fire in North Africa during May of 1943. The Division as a whole had 6 week break from nearly all military life, doing just what we view above.

Of course southern Italy had very similar conditions and this photo could easily have been shot there, but the Taranto arrival by all means was busy and time compressed to advance, of course it was also an enemy territory..your guess.
