D Company

Of Ngāi Tahu descent Stud originates from Morven in the South Island. The little Maori settlement at Morven was over-represented in both World Wars.  Stud’s dad and two brothers (both killed) were with the Māori Pioneer Battalion during the Great War while Stud, himself, managed to get away with the 10th Māori Reinforcements. He reached Egypt in 1943 and in September took part in the disastrous night exercise at Burg-el-Arab where four Māori soldiers were killed and seven others wounded.

Stud caught up with the Māori Battalion in October and was with D Company at Orsogna and Cassino as well as the other campaigns through Italy.  He came home with the Battalion in January 1946. He resides in Pukekohe.
