February 1942 was spent re-equipping and training, the Battalion regaining its vitality. Read the war diary for February 1942 here

Monte Cassino, Italy

A view of the central Italian town of Cassino and its surrounding area from Monte Trocchio. The snow-capped mountain in the distance is Monte Cairo. The township is in the centre of the photograph, nestled at the foot of Monte Cassino, on which the Benedictine monastery is clearly visible. The railway causeway curves from the bottom left of the photograph towards the railway station, before heading off up the Liri Valley on the far left. The long straight road to the right is Route 6, known as the 'Mad Mile'. The Rapido River runs across the centre of the image, crossed by both railway and road bridges. The battles for Cassino in early 1944 would claim the lives of 343 New Zealand soldiers, including 58 Māori Battalion men.
