German paratroopers over Crete

20 May 1941: in one of the world's first airborne invasions, German transport planes drop paratroopers over Heraklion in Crete. Many were killed before or soon after they reached the ground, but the Germans' seizure of Maleme airfield enabled them to land crucial reinforcements over the following days and gain the upper hand over the Allied defenders.
