70 years ago this month
May 1942 the Battalion is still at Arsal in the Syrian foothills undertaking exercises and manoeuvres. Major Tiwi Love becomes the first Māori commander of the unit. Read the war diary for May 1942 here
Corporal George Wiremu Pokau

Corporal George Wiremu Pokau was killed at Monte Cassino when the 28th Maori Battalion with allied forces attacked the enemy forces entrenched in the Monte Cassino monastery which had 360 degree commanding views over the surrounding lowlands.
This image was received by the whānau along with this commemoration scroll.
