John Waititi trout fishing on Lake Taupō.

John was part of the Tenth Reinforcements and served as an officer with C Company.

The Tenth Reinforcements were initially kept in New Zealand as a home defence force to defend against any possible attack from Japan who joined the war in 1941. They were based in Ōhaeawai in the far north along with the Eighth and Ninth reinforcements. 350 men of the Tenth Reinforcements left Wellington on the Nieuw Amserdam arriving in Port Said, Egypt in August 1943.
