As an ex-serviceman myself, I've had the privilege to have known many of whanau who had served for King & Country with this great Battalion. I also had the experience of attending the 50th Commemorative Battle of Crete back in 1991 (I think - long time ago now), where the likes of Jack Hinton VC was present as well as Sir Charles Moihi Te Arawaka Bennett who was an ex Commanding Officer of the Battalion - fond memories and some harsh stories told of what the people of Crete went through, very, very touching. I managed to go on this trip as my Great Grandfather's younger brother had fought with A Coy (The Gum-diggers) and with Headquarters and eventually taking command of the Battalion after Lt Col Arapeta Marukitepua Pitapitanuiarangi Awatere and commanding the Battalion back to Aotearoa - Lt Col James Clendon Tau Henare CBE, KBE, LLD or commonly known as Ta Hemi Henare/Sir James Henare to the people.
