Rowing Marathon From Greece to Crete..

Incredible somewhat historic photo  that belies this dangerous  rowing marathon from Greece to Crete,in what is a horrendous beginning for the 2NZEF to a long ferocious war. This epic effort getting to this bay at Canea, Crete from Greece is explained to some degree in the Official History of The 28th (Maori) Battalion, one of the Official Histories of WW2 published at length post war.

Two 28th (Maori) Battalion members are with-in this crew, Sgt. Ted Hayward and Sgt. Dick Rakanui.

Notably amongst this crew is Lt.Col. E.R. Harford DSO, ED, m.i.d. 2 i/c Divisonal Calvary Regt. 2NZEF. (centre wearing Beret)
