i first met John Ormsby in the mid 1960’s. At that time he was dairy farming in the Te Kuiti region and was chairman of the Te Kuiti Town Milk Producer and milk supply company. 

I didnt realise he was a returned service man but he had that military presence about him, neatly clipped moustache, impeccably dressed with highly polished footwear. He made the rest of us cow cockies look very much country cousins.

At that time I lived in a Rotorua suburb and often caught up with John when he visited my neighbour Tuck Gardiner whose daughter had married John’s son.

I moved onto my own dairy farm after the Rotorua Town Milk Company was sold to NZ Dairy Co and at that point unfortunately lost contact with both John and Tuck
