Private Te Whau was born on 18 December 1918. He was the brother of Douglas Te Whau and cousin of Charles Te Whau.

Private Te Whau left New Zealand onboard the ship Aquitania. He joined the fighting and was reported wounded in May 1943. After serving for nearly three years overseas, he was discharged 16 December 1945.
