May 1942 the Battalion is still at Arsal in the Syrian foothills undertaking exercises and manoeuvres. Major Tiwi Love becomes the first Māori commander of the unit. Read the war diary for May 1942 here

28 Māori Battalion veterans, Taupō 2010

13 veterans of the 28 Māori Battalion met in Taupō in December 2010 and were gracioulsy hosted by Tūwharetoa.

Standing: Te Ariki Sir Tumu te Heuheu, Lady Susan te Heuheu, Kataraina Pitiroi, Kanawa Pitiroi, Timi te Heuheu, Bill Follett, Nolan Raihania, Te Puhi Patara, Robert Gillies, Studholme Peneamena, Henry Norton and Aubrey Balzer.

Seated:  Major John Waititi, Haare Te Nuku Ratana, Hinga Smith, Arthur Midwood, Matiu Love Snr and Darcy Nepia.
