According to Hopaea Ngatoro (nee Wharepapa) Te Whitu was raised by his father's brother Te Tatana Wharepapa in Te Whanau a Kaiaio at Maungaroa, Te Whanau a Apanui and for a long time she thought he was her biological brother.
