Paki TIPA otherwise known as Sam Tipa was an grand uncle to me.  Paki or Sam was. First cousin to Te Rangihaeta Kiro, they were like brothers.  Their fathers were half brothers Hohepa TIPA and Heemi KIRO, same father.

Uncle Sam as I called him often told stories of his tour of duty in the 28th Maori Battalion. In Crete and Egypt and many other stories on how he and his fellow soldiers fared during those difficult times.

I remember as a child seeing Uncle Sam dress up in a new suit adorned with his many medals for ANZAC day parade every year in Auckland, going up to Otahuhu RSA club and into Auckland Domain.

One of the stories he shared when a cousin of his Dick Kake was shot and he carried him out of the line of enemy attack.  Uncle Paki Sam TIPA was an unsung hero during the WW2 while in the 28 Maori Battalion.

Arohanui to him and all the others that came home alive, and also those who gave their lives so valiantly.
