May 1942 the Battalion is still at Arsal in the Syrian foothills undertaking exercises and manoeuvres. Major Tiwi Love becomes the first Māori commander of the unit. Read the war diary for May 1942 here
Pte Hona Te Moana Nui a Kiwa (John) Palmer

John (Johnny) Palmer of Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Ngāti Tūwharetoa
He was the last of the Maori Battalion's D Company veterans who fought in the Battle of Greece. John was a Prisoner of War for four years in Austria.
