70 years ago this month
May 1942 the Battalion is still at Arsal in the Syrian foothills undertaking exercises and manoeuvres. Major Tiwi Love becomes the first Māori commander of the unit. Read the war diary for May 1942 here

Papa WIREMU WIRIWIRI HOKO in his Army Uniform - 28th Māori Battallion. This photo was given to my late father Matiu by his sister and Papa is hanging proudly on the wall at our home in the Tūwharetoa rohe.

This photo was taken by my eldest brother and mokopuna Maaka (Marcus) from a digital camera. That flash light represents the light that brought my Papa back from the war in Greece.
