Farewell at Palmerston North, 1940

The men of the Māori Battalion parade in full battle order through Palmerston North's Square during their official civic and government farewell in April 1940. 'Tall', 'clean cut', and 'fine looking' with 'inherent rhythm' were some of the comments made by impressed onlookers. Captain Eruera 'Tiwi' Love, who later became the first Māori to command the Battalion, can be seen leading Headquarters Company onto Rangitikei Street.
