Uniformed Māori members of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) welcome the men of the 28th Māori Battalion home at Wellington's Pipitea Wharf, 23 January 1946. A large number of Māori men and women served with other units in the New Zealand and Allied forces between 1939 and 1945, including the air force and navy, and the women's army, air force and naval auxiliaries. Many Māori have continued to pursue military careers in the decades since the Second World War.
