In the Sun newspaper, 15 February 1916, the following article appeared:Mrs W. P. Howell, of Sydenham, has received a letter from her son, Private Hemi Howell, of the Ist Maori Contingent, stating that he is in hospital at West Croydon, Surrey, England. Private Howell says in his letter that the Maoris "fought like mad, and made a reputation for New Zealand —and we will do it again.''
