On September 23, 1941the Māori
Battalion is at El Diyura near El
Alamein, Egypt. While there an open air concert was conducted
and broadcast to the people back home. C Company performed two items including this haka.

We have an answer for you - it's most likely Peta Awatere. He led them at Waitangi before they left NZ. Pine Taiapa led them in July 1941 but was away from the Battalion on a course at this time.

Thanks for the query. The haka is a combination of three Ngāti Porou classics. The words of which have been adapted to suit the theme of the war. It begins with the whakaarara taken from "Rūaumoko" and "Ko ngā iwi katoa ra". The latter of which these days is used as the intro to the haka taparahi "Poropeihana". The bulk of the words are taken from the haka taparahi "Haramai Tonu Ra" and the last part is from Ngāti Toa haka "Ka mate, ka mate"
